Is the lifting capacity strong or not? Let's see if the chain works
published:2025-08-26

We all know that on the nameplate of a chain hoist, there are markings such as 0.5t, 1t, and 2t, and these numbers represent the maximum lifting tonnage of the chain hoist. These chain hoists may not appear to have any differences on the surface, but upon closer observation, you can see that the different lifting capacities are mainly determined by the lifting chains.

The thickness of the chain of the chain hoist directly determines the difference in lifting tonnage. The diameter of the chain is generally divided into 6mm, 8mm, and 10mm. When lifting a weight of 1 ton, a 6mm diameter lifting chain is generally used. When lifting a weight of 2 to 3 tons, a 8mm diameter lifting chain is generally used. When lifting a weight of 5 to 20 tons, a 10mm diameter lifting chain is generally used.

As the lifting tonnage increases, the number of lifting chains used will also vary. Generally, one chain is used for weights under 2 tons, two chains are used for weights between 3 and 5 tons, four chains are used for 10 tons, and eight chains are used for 20 tons.

The lifting capacity of a single chain is definitely better than that of a double chain in terms of effort saving, but the lifting capacity of a single chain is only half of that of a double chain, which is commonly known as energy conservation. Effort saving does not save energy, and energy saving does not save effort. However, with the greater load capacity of multiple chains, the lifting advantage of over 2 tons cannot be replaced by single chain bars.

So when purchasing a chain hoist, it is important to have a general understanding of the lifting chain in order to ensure the efficiency and safety of the operation.
